Diamond in the Rough: Trevell Johnson

Linebacker Trevell Johnson is listed as 6’1 and 200 pounds. He’s currently a junior at James Martin High School in Arlington, TX. He also runs track for the Warriors which explains his exceptional speed. Trevell is a hard hitter with incredible vision and is almost guaranteed to run down his opponents which is shown in his film. At the end of his sophomore season, Johnson had earned second-team All-District honors at inside linebacker. He also finished with 99 tackles, with 12 tackles for a loss, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a blocked punt. Any college program will be lucky to have him because he’s not only a playmaker but a player that uses football as an opportunity to learn valuable lessons that can be used outside of the sport. With that said, Johnson currently holds offers from Arkansas, Arizona, Texas, Baylor, Boston College, Buffalo, Ole Miss, SMU, Texas Tech, and Washington State

Do you play any other sports? If so, talk about your positions and how they help you on the field.

Right now, it’s just track. I’m trying to focus on getting faster during the off-season and track is the perfect sport to do that and it also keeps me in shape.

What’s your favorite thing about your position?

I’m in the middle of the field, so that puts me in position to make a lot of plays. That also means I have a big leadership role on the defense.

What are some goals you have for this season?

I’d say a personal goal is to lead the district in tackles and a team goal would be to win state.

How do you think your coaches and teammates would describe you as a player?

They would say I’m a hard worker and I have good leadership attributes.

What would you bring to a college program and what are you looking for out of one?

I’m looking for a brotherhood and good coaching. I feel like I would be a good asset to a college team because I can play multiple positions and I take in information well.

Trevell Johnson, LB for the Arlington Martin Warriors, Class of ’22

What motivates you to do what you do? Why do you play?

I play for the name on my back. I’m making sure my mom has one less college tuition to pay for.

Have you thought about what you like to study in college?

Not really yet.

How hard was it for you to stay in shape since the beginning of the pandemic?

It wasn’t hard at all. We were lucky enough to have coaches who figured out at home workouts and when we were finally able to work out, we had strength and conditioning.

How do you prepare for upcoming games?

It’s all film during the week and making sure we know everything about them and what they do. You can’t go slow during practice; it makes you slow in the game.

What do you want to get out of playing football?

Life lessons really. People think football is just a sport, but there’s much more to it.

What are three reasons you like being a part of a team?

The bonds, life lessons, and the things it can do for you in the long run.

How does athletics make you a better person or worker?

At Martin, they do a good job of teaching you certain things that you might need in the future and the coaches teach you plenty of helpful resources that help you not only in school but in life too.
